Public Health Wales VR Training
Step inside the room. We built an immersive VR training experience for Public Health Wales on Pico headsets, a fully interactive 3D world that teaches staff what every machine in a clinical room does, why it matters, and how to use it safely, guided by a friendly interactive avatar.
Public Health Wales needed a way to train staff on complex clinical environments without taking real rooms, real equipment or senior clinicians out of service. We answered with a fully immersive virtual reality training platform built for the Pico standalone headset, dropping each learner into a photoreal 3D replica of a working clinical room they can explore at their own pace.
At the heart of the experience is spatial understanding. Rather than reading a manual, trainees walk the room and discover every machine in context, ventilators, monitors, imaging and infection-control equipment, each one highlighted with clear in-world labels that explain what it does, the role it plays in patient safety, and why its correct use matters. Seeing the equipment where it actually lives makes the learning stick.
An interactive avatar guide leads the session. The avatar points out hazards, demonstrates correct procedure, asks questions and responds to where the learner looks and moves, turning a passive walkthrough into a genuine conversation. Learners can pick up, inspect and operate equipment with natural hand and controller interactions, building real muscle memory before they ever set foot on a ward.
Because it runs on Pico standalone hardware, the whole programme is wireless, portable and easy to roll out across sites, no high-end PC, no tethered cables, no specialist setup. A session can be run anywhere there's space to stand, making consistent, repeatable training available to every team across the organisation.
We led the concept, the 3D world design, the interaction model and the avatar-driven learning flow end to end, delivering a VR training tool that is safer, more memorable and more scalable than traditional classroom or shadowing approaches, and genuinely raises the standard of clinical-environment training across Public Health Wales.
