Swimming Without Stress
Swimming Without Stress teaches adults who are afraid of water to float without fear, on one-to-one residential courses in West Wales run by Ian and Cheryl Cross since 2002. Their mission is gentle: help people trust the water to support them, using the Alexander Technique. They wanted a website as calm as their teaching, one that reassures anxious non-swimmers, tells real student stories and makes it easy to book a course.
Swimming Without Stress exists for the people most swimming lessons leave behind: adults who are afraid of water, who can't put their face in, who feel like they're going to sink, or who had a bad experience as a child that never quite left them. Ian and Cheryl Cross have been running their one-to-one residential course in beautiful West Wales since 2002, with thirty years of one-to-one teaching experience between them.
Their approach is what makes them different. Instead of shouted instructions from the poolside, they work in the water with each student, using hands-on guidance based on the Alexander Technique. The philosophy runs through everything: let go and enjoy the support of the water instead of struggling against it. Floating freely and gliding with a relaxed neck come first; freedom of movement follows. As one student put it, it's about a relationship with the water.
That mission shaped the whole brief. A website for anxious non-swimmers cannot look or feel like a hard-sell sports site. It needed to be calm, warm and human: soft water blues, generous space, plain reassuring language, and real faces and voices front and centre so nervous visitors immediately feel understood rather than judged.
The homepage meets visitors exactly where they are, with a simple checklist of worries: I'm afraid of water, I can't get my feet back on the ground, I'm exhausted after a length. If any of them ring true, the site gently explains how the course helps. Video case studies from real students carry the emotional weight, because hearing someone who once feared water describe learning to float says more than any sales copy could.
Beyond the reassurance, the site works hard practically. Clear journeys cover lessons, the Alexander Technique approach, where they teach, accommodation for the residential stay, prices and booking, alongside a well-loved blog of meditations on learning to swim and a small shop.
Under the hood, we migrated the site from WordPress onto our own builder. That move removed the plugin patchwork that makes WordPress sites a constant security worry: no more plugin vulnerabilities, urgent updates or admin logins to defend, just a locked-down platform we manage ourselves. It also raised the SEO ceiling, with faster page loads, clean semantic markup, structured data and search-friendly architecture, so the site climbs for the searches nervous swimmers actually make. The result is a digital home that does what Ian and Cheryl do in the pool: takes the fear out of the first step.
